September 4, 2006
– Captain Courage, a Mr Jess Perry colt and one of 11 registered foals
produced by 1997 champion broodmare Corona Chick, sold for $415,000 to top
the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, held September 1-3 at Ruidoso Downs.
Bred and consigned by Julianna Hawn Holt of Blanco, Texas, Captain Courage
sold to Chad Hart of Royston, Georgia. The colt is a half brother to
champion and 1997 All American Futurity (G1) winner Corona Cash, Grade
1-winner and leading sire Corona Cartel, and stakes-winner Corona Czech.
Another Holt homebred, the Mr Jess Perry colt Red Storm Cat, sold for
$330,000 to GA Connection. Red Storm Cat is one of three registered foals
produced by Tiny Dash Of Cash, a 10-year-old winning Dash For Cash mare who
ran second in champion Hes My Dasher’s 1998 Rainbow Futurity (G1). The colt
is a half brother to Sizzling, a Corona Cartel mare who won this year’s John
Deere West/Southwest Distaff Challenge (G3) at Arapahoe Park.
The
third high-seller, DM Selexus, was acquired for $300,000 by AQHA Executive
Committee member Jim Helzer of Arlington, Texas, and his wife, Marilyn. Bred
by Don Moler of Cheyenne, Oklahoma, the Separatist colt is a full brother to
reigning AQHA world champion DM Shicago.
Total sales during the three-day sale reached $17,011,800 for 450 yearlings,
compared to $15,126,100 for 427 head in ’05. The average-per-yearling price
this year was $37,804, up 5 percent from last year’s average of $35,424.
Also, 36 yearlings were purchased for $100,000 or more, up 56 percent from
last year’s 23. Complete coverage of the sale will appear in the October
