STRAWFLY SPECIAL DIES

Strawfly Special, sire of two-time world champion Tailor Fit and All American Futurity winners Streakin Flyer and Ausual Suspect, died of colic Monday night [August 9, 2004] at Double Bar S Ranch home in Moreno Valley. He was 17.

Owned by Sharon, Rhonda and Dawn List of Double Bar S Ranch, Strawfly Special's progeny has earned over $17.7 million, making him one of the sport's all-time leading sires. This year, Strawfly Special is the leading sire of winners with 120 and second leading sire in graded stakes winners with six. He currently ranks fifth in total earnings with $1,532,948 and sixth with 26 two-year-old winners in 2004.

In addition to millionaires Tailor Fit, Streakin Flyer, and Ausual Suspect, the son of Special Effort out of the mare Fly In The Pie sired stake winners Flyng Dino, Strawflyin Buds, Mrstrawflytoyou, Flys R Streakin, Last Shall Be First, Genuine Strawfly, Rock N Strawfly, Sneaky Flyer, Sum Special Strawfly, etc.

On the track, Strawfly Special won 11 of 25 career starts including the Southern California Derby in 1990. He was second in the Bay Meadows Futurity and Lowell Dillingham Handicap, and third in the Heritage Place Futurity.

"This is a big disappointment," said Jerry Young, ranch manager of Double Bar S Ranch. "We are going to miss him dearly."
